About Michelle - owner of Woven Heather

Michelle is a weaver, spinner and dyer of 20 years experience. She was fortunate enough to be guided by the most amazing tutors when she first started her fibre journey. They were generous with their knowledge and helped at every stage of her development in the early days.

Over the years Michelle used ever more complex looms, culminating in a 16 shaft dobby loom, alongside an 8 shaft newer style dobby. But the complexity squashed some of her enthusiasm, so she scaled back to 4 shafts and rigid heddle. It made her realise just how much can be achieved with less shafts and allowed an exploration of the craft of weaving, with freedom from expectations.

During the same time, Michelle developed her spinning skills to include art yarns, which have been created to use in her woven pieces. A move to Scotland then enabled Michelle to start exploring dyes and especially natural dyes and how to create them within a sustainable practice, which informs all Michelle's work.

Michelle teachs spinning at beginnner level through Craft Courses (click here to be taken to her page for booking a course). She creates woven fabrics from both handspun and commercial yarn, plus at times weaves handfasting cords for wedding ceremonies.
